1. Summary of the Program
..The Korean Flagship Overseas Program is a two-year study program with an overseas portion that was established at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2002 (UHM Korean Flagship Program http://www2.hawaii.edu/~flagship). The program was designed to foster the expertise of American students involving the highest level of Korean language proficiency (Superior Level ACTFL OPI). After undergoing of one year of preparation, the University of Hawaii began accepting students for the domestic program in the fall semester of 2003. After one year of study beginning in the 2004 fall semester, these 7 first-cohort students went on to successfully complete their second year overseas course by June of 2005.

..The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) also began its Korean Flagship Program in the fall of 2004(UCLA Korean Flagship Project http://www.international.ucla.edu/lrc/flagship/flagship.html)

..Currently, there are 10 second-cohort students who have completed their first year in the domestic part of the program either at UCLA or the University of Hawaii. They are joined by one 1.5-cohort student who completed one-third of the UCLA course before leaving to study in Korea, for a total of 11 actively participating students.

 
2. Goal
..To achieve the highest level of fluency in the Korean language through taking undergraduate or graduate major courses and the media course, interning at a workplace, and participating various cultural activities, all while living in a real immersion setting.
